Laser Resurfacing (also known as fractional resurfacing, laser peel, laser skin resurfacing) is one of the most effective treatments for minimizing the appearance of skin irregularities such as an uneven skin tone or texture, acne scarring and fine lines.

Here at Fresh Medical Spa, we offer two types of laser resurfacing treatments: Non-Ablative and Ablative.

Non-Ablative (or non-wounding) laser resurfacing targets below the epidermis (the surface layer or part you see).

Ablative laser resurfacing targets and strips away the epidermis (outer layer) and dermis (inner layer of the skin).

Laser resurfacing treatments can be performed on almost any area of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, hands and back.

Laser resurfacing utilizes specific laser wavelengths to target and treat the skin. Laser energy is converted into heat, which then breaks down the tissue and kick starts the body natural healing response. As the skin begins to heal itself, collagen is produced which promotes smoother, more even skin.

Collagen is a critical element in maintaining youthful, healthy looking skin. It can effectively minimize the appearance of scars and pitting by plumping the skins surface. Here at Fresh Medical Spa we use the state-of-the-art Palomar Icon Lux1540™ laser for our Non-Ablative Fractional Laser Treatments and the Palomar Icon Lux2940™ Fractional hand piece for our Ablative treatments.

Laser resurfacing is commonly used to treat the following:

  • Acne scarring (face & body)
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation or sun damage

Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing: $300 full face

Non-Ablative lasers utilize laser energy to heats below the skin evaporating both water and tissue which encourages new skin growth. These lasers do not directly damage the outer layers of skin.

Benefits: Less invasive, lower cost, quick healing

Considerations: Not as effective (less aggressive approach), 6 treatments recommended for best results, effective at treating more superficial problems

Ablative Laser Resurfacing: $1000 full face

Ablative lasers create a wound response to encourage healthy regrowth and healing. The laser penetrates both the epidermis and dermis, encouraging new skin growth, elastin and collagen production. Ablative treatments are most effective at reducing the appearance of acne scarring and long-term sun damage.

Benefits: Most effective, less treatment required for effectiveness

Considerations: Higher cost, longer recover period, potential for pigment changes (most notable in those with darker complexions)

Non-Ablative treatments are performed by one of our certified laser technicians. Ablative treatments are performed by Dr.Barnard, MD.

The condition of your skin, skin type and degree of concern are all factors in how effective a laser resurfacing treatment will be for you. A complimentary consultation is required prior to any fractional treatment. During your consultation you’ll have the opportunity to talk about your skin care concerns, get an in-depth evaluation and develop an action plan that best fits your individual needs. This one-on-one setting is the perfect opportunity to learn about and prepare for your upcoming treatment.

Before your treatment begins, your technician will recap what to expect before, during and after your treatment (these details will be discussed, in-depth, during your consultation as well). After getting comfortable in the reclined seat, your clinician will begin preparations, including prepping your skin and protecting your eye area. A few light pulses will be delivered in the treatment area to gauge your tolerance and allow you get comfortable with the sensation. The entire procedure may take a few minutes to one hour depending on the size of the area being treated.

for Non-Ablative treatments: It is normal to experience redness, warmth, swelling and a mild burning sensation, similar to a mild sunburn, in the treatment area. This may last from a few hours to a few days after the procedure.

for Ablative treatments: This is a more intensive treatment and will require a longer healing time. Your clinician will discuss the most effective pre and post treatment guidelines with you during your consultation.

Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing: Expect to see a gradual improvement after each Non-Ablative treatment. Results will vary depending on the initial condition of your skin and your skin type. The need for additional treatments will vary from person to person depending on many factors including skin type, age, lifestyle and the extent of the initial skin damage. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend completing a set of 6 treatments for the best results.

The lasting effects of your Non-Ablative treatment will depend on all of the above. Most clients see best results with a series of treatments followed by regular maintenance treatments.

Ablative Laser Resurfacing: After the skin is fully healed, clients typically see a marked improvement in tone and texture. We generally do not recommend multiple treatments however continued maintenance, at-home skin care, sun protection and less invasive exfoliation treatments, such as chemical peels and microdermbrasion, aid in retaining noticeable, lasting results. Clients may also benefit from additional Non-Ablative Fractional treatments to further improve results.
